Handicap Race Series 2022

It’s that time of year again for our WNRC handicap race series! Mark your diaries for the below dates:

  • Race 1: Wednesday 14 September, 6:00pm
  • Race 2: Wednesday 12 October, 6:00pm
  • Race 3: Wednesday 9 November, 6:00pm

Note: Please try to arrive at least 10-15 minutes before the start time.

For those who have not participated before, the race is FREE and open to EVERYONE. WNRC members and non-members of all abilities are welcome to participate. Each race is 5km and each runner will start at different times, based on their expected pace, with the aim of all runners racing to cross the finish line at the same time (i.e. slower runners will start before faster runners).  WNRC normally run from World Gym every Wednesday at 6.00pm, but for the 3 race nights, we will be at Governors Square with the start line behind Cost U Less.  The 5km route is two loops of Governors Square to Public Beach.

Trophies are up for grabs for the overall winner, the fastest male and fastest female runners.  We are proud to host one of the only races where EVERYONE has a chance of winning as the overall winners are calculated on placings as well as time improvements. Trophies will be presented at our annual social after the third race (date TBC).

Last year’s defending champs are…

  • Overall winner: Tim Warren, who ran 5km in 28m 44s – over 3 ½ minutes improvement on his first race time.
  • Fastest female: Michelle Vinton, who ran 5km in 20m 20s and set a new course record.
  • Fastest male: Esmond Brown, who ran 5km in 17m 6s, not quite enough to beat the course record set by Dominic Dyer in 2020 with a time of 15m 36s.

More information and the route map are available here https://wnrc.ky/handicap-series/

To sign up, please respond to this email.  If you have not run with us before, please also provide your estimated 5km time.

Note that the roads will not be closed during the races and the route will not be marshalled. Runners are responsible for their own safety during the run and need to be aware of traffic. Wearing light-coloured clothing, reflective strips/lights and water are recommended.

We look forward to seeing you there!
